The day has finally come - as of February 2025, I've finally got my voice acting and narration business to the point that I can officially declare Maylander Vocal Productions LLC (better known as Maylander Vocals) as open to the public.
Honestly, if you had told me two years ago that it would take this long to get my voiceover business up and running, I probably would have laughed. "Anyone can do voice over work," I might have told you. "How hard could it be to start up a business as a voice actor?
This is the first time I've ever done my own business. I'll admit that there was a lot of learning on the fly I had to do. I needed to be humbled in more ways than one. I had to accept that while I have a natural voice for this industry that I still had so much to learn (and I still do). I had to get myself in the mental position that I would need coaching and that my initial approach wasn't right.
It's one of the reasons I changed my website around over the past month - most notably removing all the 2nd person (we/us/etc.) language and just started admitting that this business is one person - me. I should be using the term "I" for the business and refer more to myself than my company. It's also one of the reasons I've added more pictures and tried to give my corner of the internet a more personal feel.
That's not to say that I did this alone. My wife has been my biggest supporter, and I wouldn't have survived without her love and her help. My vocal coach Alyson Steel took me from someone who thought he knew it all and would breeze into the world of voiceover to a point where I have a professional demo and I'll be taking my first voice acting contracts. And of course my family (including my four fur babies) and friends have been there through it all to. I can't thank all of you enough.
I don't know where this journey will take me. I can't tell you who I'll be working for or where you might hear my voice next. But I can tell you I'm incredibly excited for what the future holds for me, and I can't wait to jump into this strange new world of voice acting and narration. And I'm excited to have you, dear reader, as a partner on this trip of a lifetime!
